The Imperial and Ukhamba Community Development Trust
The Imperial and Ukhamba Community Development Trust was established in 2003 by Imperial Holdings. It was established to assist impoverished communities to improve the standard of education at schools. This is achieved by providing the adopted schools with textbooks, reading material, teaching aids, teacher training workshops, sports equipment and excursions.
The project commenced in 2004 with the adoption of two schools Inkululeko Yesizwe and Igugulethu Primary Schools in Vlakfontein. Vlakfontein is an informal settlement in the south of Johannesburg. In 2007 a further two schools were adopted, Finetown Primary situated in Grasmere and Tshepana Primary situated in Orange Farm. Unfortunately due to lack of commitment by the educators and parents of Igugulethu Primary we were forced to withdraw from the school in March of 2007.
The Trust is presently concentrating on Primary education. There are far too many organizations who are trying to improve matric results. The Trustees believe that if a culture of learning is established in the foundation years the matric results will automatically improve.
